After last year's blow up as the Phillies' closer, I can understand that alot of you don't have faith in him.
He does have a high WHIP (1.35) for a guy who has a 2.32 ERA, which make somethink he's a ticking time bomb. I looked closer at his stats and he's had a couple year saving 40+ games with a 2.something ERA and a WHIP around 1.3's.
So far though, Jose Mesa has been pretty good. Some people think that he's a good closer, others think that he's a ticking time bomb, what do you think? He never just mentioned aroud here except when someone says he's bound to blow up.

Mesa has yet to blow a save, doesn't give up alot of earned runs. He is on a struggling team with a decent staff that means he does not get too many opportunities. Everyone rags on him for last years mess but he has straightened out this year and if given the chance can save 35+.
I doubt he'll ever match his 1995 numbers again. That being said, last year may have just been a blip.
Despite what Madbomber says, the Pirates always have a lot of save ops every year. I don't have hard cold numbers on this, but it seems like every year there is a Pittsburg closer hooking someone up.
I think he'll keep it up as long as he doesn't get traded.
I heard a rumor that Cleveland would be interested in him if none of their current RPs work out in the closer role. I doubt this will happen though.
So far this week in my H2H league: 1 save, 1 win, 0.00 era, 0.50 whip. I'll take it from a WW closer!
he was a quality closer in the past, he is a quality closer now... he just happened to have a mental hiccup for about a year or two while in philly.
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll drown because you forgot to teach him to swim.

I read a pitching report on the Pirates where they commented on new acquisitions Oliver Perez and Jose Mesa back in April... the pirates pitching staff supposedly worked on the delivery mechanics of these guys and made some suggestions (maybe the reason why they went out to get 'em?) and i cant argue with the results we're seeing this year.
