Calls Up/ Send Down

Does anyone know how the system works in MLB. Calling players up and sending them down. How many times can a player be brought up and sent down? Does he have to clear waivers?

It depends on his contract and how many options he has to be sent down. If he doesn't have any more options then he can be picked up by other teams once they designate him for assignment. If no one takes him then I believe he is just sent down to the minors or they could just release him.
