Wow, as a White Sox fan I find this pretty amusing. I would think LA could find someone else deep in their bullpen if they did not want to use Mota or Gagne. But, he did suprisingly well. Only needed 12 pitches to get 3 outs. Did anyone actually see him in the game? What kind of stuff did he have?
Nevermind, I just saw the highlights. Pretty funny to see him pitching. Didnt Jose Canseco come in for relief in a similar situation a long time ago, and injure his shoulder pretty badly? Maybe I am thinking of something else, but I am pretty sure something happened.
I just looked it up and in 1993, he pitched 1 inning, allowing 3 ER on 3 walks and 2 hits. A month later he had to undergo season ending ligament surgery on his right elbow. I guess his body was too bulky and muscle-bound, and he wasn't used to the pitching motions, which caused the injury.
And about the homerun being hit off his head.... 3 days before he pitched, he was going for a fly ball and jumped at the wall to catch it. But instead of catching the ball, it hit off his head and went for a home run. That does not sound like it was a good week for Jose!
I bet Ventura was wishing that somehow Nolan Ryan could step up to plate as an Angel and Ventura could look for some revenge.
The whole Conseco pitching thing was quite an event. The whole Dallas sports media criticized Bobby Valentine and the Texas coaches for the decision for weeks. The HR off his head...that was just plain hilarious (never was a Conseco fan and I horrified as i saw Texas trade my childhood idle Ruben Sierra for him).
