Maybe I should give up, sigh no one ever believes me :~( :~( :~( :~( :~( :~(

The A's are not going to trade Barry Zito this season. period.

I'm not trying to be facetious or anything, I just wonder which combination of the "Big Three" Oakland will be able keep? Will they be able to resign all three eventually to long term deals? I don't follow the A's that closely so I'm not sure what kind of shape the finances direction they are going etc are like there, but is it even feasible to think they can sign all three to long term deals? And if not which one/two is/are most expendable at this point?

I'd be very wary of any deals with Boston's name in the mix. They've already proven how inept they are at the business of baseball (see Arod, Garciaparra & Pedro).

I know, I know - wishful thinking. He's signed through 2005 and any deal would most likely happen next year (if at all). But as a Sox fan, I can't help thinking what if..... :-? :-? :-?

hey what about that giants deal? sabean could easily pull that off, and maybe even get something better, and do u think that would put the giants over the hump to get into the playoffs?

I'd love for Reed to go to Colorado ;-D

Texas/Oakland Zito deal really makes sense. Dan Johnson should be starting somewhere already. Zito's a solid starter, but he's not someone I'd put my money on at playoff time to win one game. Not a #1 starter on a playoff team but is a #1 starter (aka Top 30 pitcher in baseball). They shouldn't of signed Mark Redman, simple as that and they coulda used that money to get a reliever.

Benson is a lot better than his ERA indicates and would be a nice addition to SD, though I don't know where he'd fit in if they can't find Tankersley a spot right now.

Really all those deals make sense and I agree 100% with Peter :-o

Zito career postseason
3-2 record
2.76 ERA

looks good to me?

GSES, at this point I'm actually hoping for your sake that Zito doesn't get moved. If he does, not only will you be severely bummed out but you'll also have a lot of crow to eat.

Don't go Zito! ;-)

So you're telling me you have one game to win (putting every bit of Oakland bias aside) you'd go with Zito over Pedro/Schilling/Randy Johnson/Jason Schmidt/Prior/Wood/Beckett???

I've given Zito's a #1 guy by the very meaning (a Top 30 MLB starter), but amongst the 8 teams that make the playoffs -- he's not one of the first guys coming to mind as a #1 guy I'd lay it all on the lie with.

I don't think 2.76 ERA means much for one game. Given I think any of the above better options for ONE GAME than Zito, I'd pin my chances Zito's 2.76 ERA (for whatever is worth for one game) wouldn't be good enough.

If were bring up stats, let's look at the two most recent years:

2002 -- ALDS vs. Minnesota (4.50 ERA)...Might of been good enough to beat the Twins, but is that good enough to beat any of the above for one game?? IMO No.

2003 -- ALDS vs. Boston (3.46 ERA). Same deal IMO.

I'd take my chances any day of the week with a power guy in one game. As Johnson and Beckett have shown in the recent past, one starter can lead a team to the title.

Your putting words in my mouth, I never said I would take him over your above names. Mulder & Hudson I would take over zito. Im simply defending the fact he isnt as bad as everyone makes him out to be in fact since May 1st he has a sub 3 ERA and has gotten LITTLE to no run support. If he were on the sox or yankees he would have more wins then he does and last season his 3.30 ERA would have gotten him close to 20 wins on the sox or yanks. Lowe won like 17 w/ an ERA well over 4.
