Should-be Hall of Famers.....but aren't

Postby ajgnydc722 » Sun Jun 13, 2004 10:02 am

Who's the number 1 guy you think should be in the Hall but wasn't voted in? I have no choice but to go with my all-time favorite player...

Don Mattingly.

No way this guy shouldn't be in the HoF.

PS: Special mention goes to Sandberg.

I would go with Ryno as well. As for Mattingly, I am a Yankee fan and a huge Donnie Baseball fan but I have to disagree. He shouldn't be in. While he fits my criteria for being the best at his position for a time, that time wasn't long enough because of injury. Blame it on the back. I look at it like I look at Koufax in the best pitcher ever discussion. The body of work just isn't long enough, IMHO.

Fair point Lo. Maybe I'm just biased but what Donnie Baseball did for the Yankees and for the game was HoF material IMO. The first half of his career was definately HoF material but the 2nd he was hurt by injury (sounds a WHOLE lot like Ken Griffey Jr. :-? ). He still stands out as one of the biggest warriors this game has ever had though. He paved the way for the Yankees dynasty in the late 90's.

Donnie didn't play long enough to be in the Hall. He had a great few years, but not enough. Granted thats due to back problems, but in the end longevity is important in being a HOFer.

Ryne Sandberg
Ron Santo

Sadly it will probably take Ron Santo's death before he can get into the hall of fame.
