Borowski Gone for 4-6 Weeks

Cubs Closer Has Rotator Cuff Damage

Cubs closer Joe Borowski has a tear in the rotator cuff of his pitching arm and will be out 4-6 weeks, according to Chicago general manager Jim Hendry.


Surgery will not be required, however. That decision was made Friday after Angels doctor Lewis Yocum examined the right-handed reliever and conferred with Cubs doctor Stephen Gryzlo about MRI results.


"There are a lot of examples of pitchers who have had this type of tear and have come back and pitched well,'' Hendry told the Chicago Sun-Times for Saturday's editions. "Obviously, it's not good news.''


Borowski, who was 9-for-11 in saves situations before his injury came to light, went on the disabled list June 5. He'd been struggling since spring training, his velocity never topping 88 mph after hitting 94 mph previously.


Whether he returns as the closer later this season is irrelevant, says Borowski. "I just want to get back out on the field and pitch again."


In the meantime, LaTroy Hawkins is closing for the Cubs.

As a Hawkins owner i'm happy to that he'll remain the closer for a while. Not sure if he'll take over the job for the rest of the season, but at least we know that Borowski was put on the DL for a reason other than sucking.

I think if Hawkins preforms well, it will be hard for Borowski to regain his job. So if Hawkins is still somehow available in your league, grab him!
