Eric Davis - such a shame his career never went anywhere because of injuries
Griffey Jr - see above, though obviously not as bad as davis.

When I got old enough to understand the sport, my first favorite was Mike Gallego. When he left the Yankees, the heir to the SS position and #2 was immediately my favorite for no other reason than his # and his position. This is of course none other than Derek Jeter
