Who is this year's Loaiza?

Paul Wilson?
Chris Carpenter?
Kenny Rogers maybe?

Esteban Loaiza is the only person that can be Esteban Loaiza. Seriously though, how many times has this question been asked? As far as which of the three pitchers you listed will give you the best stats, go with Carpenter. Wilson and Rogers both pitch in hitter-friendly ballparks, and Carpenter was pretty held in pretty high regard before his injry problems.

I wouldn't start establishing a precedent of searching for the next Loaiza. Basically, your criteria is "Pitcher who goes from terrible to stud overnight". Its not an every-year occurence.

If you look at key indicators like K/BB and WHIP, Wilson and Rogers are doing it with smoke and mirrors. They'll be getting rocked soon. Carpenter is the best of that group, and I'm not so sure he fits the Loaiza bill because he's always been a talented pitcher who just can't stay healthy.

I think the closest Loaiza this year is Sheets, Sheets never had a good ERA and never surpassed 11 wins. either had Loaiza. Loaiza lead the AL in strikeouts last year, Sheets is very close in the NL. I dont think anyone can compare to Loaiza though, because he put up those stats after putting out 9 poor seasons out of 10 prior to last year. Sheets has only had 3 seasons so hes not even close to Loaiza, but closest I think.

That doesn't make any sense to me. Doesn't a Loaiza comparison require some sort of lack of past success? Rogers has 166 career wins, and was pretty good as recently as 2002 (13-8, 3.84).

Loaiza is the exception to all the rules. He had an incredible year without any foretelling sign. There's not much point in looking for another one of him.

Although he got rocked yesterday I really like Doug Davis. I'm not ready to call him a Loaiza just yet, but he is a cheap pitcher who will produce more than you pay for him.

lets loosely define Esteban Loiaza as a talented guy whos always had it but never been able to put it together... Jeff Weaver kinda fits into that description methinks... i also loved John Patterson (Expos) before he got injured (again :-o

)... lets hope he doesn't lose too much when he comes back :-°

...plus Jared Weaver's kickin some a$$ in Atlanta ;-D
