why did Duke pitch 3.0 innings and rhodes pitch the 9th?

Postby Krunk City King$ » Mon Jun 07, 2004 2:39 pm

i picked up duke after reading the hype about him being given chances to close games for a few.

yesterday i saw him on the mound in the 6th inning.... 8-o

i thought that he would have gotten that "pitched four innings type of save", and then in came rhodes in the 9th....

was this a confidence building session for rhodes?

if so i am gonna dump duke and get cordero. i appreciated the 3 scorless innings (and the team that i was playing had rhodes) that helped my ERA and WHIP, but if he is not saving games, i do not wanna carry this feller. :-t

i was hoping to hold onto him and trade him to a desperate owner...

anyone know what is really up with this situation?

I was hoping he'd get the 4 inning save too, especially once the 1 inning save variety opportunity disappeared. He went over 70 pitches in extra innings against the Tigers earlier this year, so he definitely could have gone a 4th inning when he had only pitched 35 pitches.

I don't know what to think.

I dropped him for Takatsu last night...seems they are trying to let Rhodes earn the large contract. Think of it like the Mantei situation...we all know Duch would be a better closer, but then that would make Oakland look stupid for signing such an expensive setup man.

I'd way rather have Cordero than The Duke..BUT, for those who keep thinking Mid Relievers are useless in leagues who don't count holds, think again....The Duke single handidly won me ERA & WHIP yesterday W/ HIS 3 INNINGS OF MAGIC ;-D

I picked up Duke last week reading that when Beane said "CBC" what he really meant was, bring on The Duke.

Turns out what he really meant is, well, CBC.

So I dumped The Duke today. I don't need another CBC reliever.

hopefully this means that they feel duke is the better arm and want to get more work out of him, so they will use him in long relief or in more of a setup role. this could be a situation like cleveland where they use the better pitcher to set up and at least ALLOW for some save opps that may not have been there otherwise. sounds like silly thinking but I guess it makes sense.

regardless as a rhodes owner I'm happy with the situation as long as rhodes gets the late appearances! probably end up seeing the A's stagger Mecir with rhodes though.
