Yeah, I'd say the hype machine played a huge part in it. I admittedly don't follow amateur players all that closely, but a within the last few months I heard so much about Weaver. Now within the last few weeks, I hear that he is extremely polished, and will be ready very soon but his stuff is merely above average. He probably didn't deserve a top 10 pick.

Amazinz, how do you feel about getting Humber? Personally, I'm suprised they didn't pick Niemann.

Niemann went four b/c teams have injury concerns. He had surgery before the season. He probably has the most upside in the draft.

All of the scouts had the Rice trio rated higher than Weaver yet the media never shut up about Jered. *shrug*

To be honest I don't have much of an opinion on Humber. I know just a little about those three from scouting reports I've read and Baseball America but that's about it. I'm glad the Mets went with a pitcher, I just hope they picked the right one. ;-)

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

what are your thoughts ensanimal? Why did the dodgers choose a HS player named Scott Elbert?

Forget the man crush. I drop what I'm doing to watch Zack Greinke pitch.

The Dodgers have traditionally gone the HS route. Depodesta hasn't even been there a year so the scouting director might have had some seious influence w/ the owner and others. Also, the Moneyball group isn't totally against HS players. If they have the stats to back up the scouting reports, they will select the player regardless of HS or college. This may just be a case where the Dodgers thought Elbert was the best player available.

Don't know much about him, just thought it was funny with all the moneyball talk about the draft, and depodesta's thinking, that they use their 1st pick on a hs pitcher.

LOL at the A's pick in the first round (the guy from SC). He was taken in like the 20th last year. Moneyball is overrated.

They did cash in in the Supp. 1st, though. Street and Putnam are very solid.

As a D-Ray fan, I'm very happy with Niemann. Hopefully we can suck badly this year and take Upton at #1 next year. :)
