The Marlins are kicking around the idea of acquiring Royals CF Carlos Beltran for prospects, then shipping Beltran to the Yankees for RHP Jose Contreras, assuming the Yankees would pay nearly all of the approximately $20 million that Contreras is owed through 2006. The Marlins would use Contreras as a reliever, going with RHP Chad Fox, Contreras and RHP Armando Benitez in the late innings after Fox returns from an elbow injury--a significant upgrade for a bullpen that began the week 12th in the National League in ERA. A more realistic trade could involve Marlins OF Abraham Nunez and Royals RH reliever Jason Grimsley. . . .
So Florida would trade prospects and Carlos Beltran, all for JOSE CONTRERAS?!?!
How do some of these people get their jobs because I can make up horrible rumors myself.
I don't think it will happen either...but you have to think that the Marlins think Contreras is just a mental case from playing in such a big market team. I could maybe see the Marlins benefitting if Contreras were still young (he's 31!), but being that he's already old, I don't think that's a good trade at all for Florida.

Read it again, it says that the Yankees would have to take on all of Contreras' contract. In other words, get rid of the guy. Isn't that what they did with that "Fat Toad" Hideki Irabu? Remember that guy?

My bad. key to any deal won't be what the Fish get - It's what they give up. Some other team is going to give the Royals more for 3 months of Beltran than what the the Marlins are willing to give in exhange for Contreras.
"Girl, you look so good, someone ought to put you on a plate and sop you up with a biscuit!"
Yeah, it's a bogus rumor. It looks like the Padres are the current front-runners (Burroughs/Nady), although the Yankees have finally thrown out a name that caught Baird's attention - Dioner Navarro. The Mets could have him in a heartbeat but they have flat out said that Wright is untouchable. The Phillies apparently still have Byrd and perhaps Floyd or Hamels on the table. The only team I keep hearing mentioned but have no idea what they would offer is the Red Sox. My guess right now is Beltran/Randa to San Diego for Burroughs/Nady/Long.
The Marlins apparently are interested in Grimsley from the Royals.
Seriously step back and look at it from a Baseball perspective, not from a fantasy perspective. Its already known that Florida is MLB's Salary clearing house. Thats the advantage they have in bieng best friends with the Seligs, (or married to one, I forget witch) But anyways ...
Ever hear of Mike Piazza?
How about Mike Hampton?
Thats exactly the kinda of dumb deals that the Marlins pull off.
