The General Manager for the Cubs did a 20-minute interview on a local sports station this morning. He specifically stated that the closer will be a "commitee" situation and named Hawkins, Farnsworth and even Remlinger and Beltran! Which one comes in will be based on the game situation at the time. I would stay away from this situation if possible. I saw a post earlier which asked, "Affeldt or Hawkins"? If you are faced with a similar one, go with Affeldt without question.
hendry also said prior's injury wasnt too serious and wood was only removed for precautionary reasons. i'll eat my hat if beltran gets a save. hawkins will be the man.
i dont think Baker has much faith in Hawkins as a closer, as he should be. With Minnesota, Hawkins was terrible in the closer role. So far this year hes blown 2 out of his 5 save opps. I wouldnt be suprised if they go CBC.

Finally, someone else who agrees with me. Hawkins is not a good closer...I personally wouldn't be surprised to see a trade on the horizon.
Beltran has pitched well. It would be more surprising if Remlinger picked one up. I guess we'll wait and see. But if you have room on your rosters, I'd hold on to Borowski.
i would dump borowski. he is going on the DL and is going to get tests done. That cant be good at all and is probably the reason his velocity went down.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
hawkins' struggles as a closer are well documented but they occurred in 2001. you are conveniently ignoring 2+ years of great work in middle relief. i know, it isnt the same as closing, but it has to be worth something. also, of his two blown saves this year only one occurred in the 9th inning (traditional save opp). the one traditional save that he blew was in the second game of a double header in which he pitched in both games.
