This may seem like a wild guess, and it certainly is, but wasn't it because the red sox let a couple of his player friends go? I am not sure if this was the reason he suspended his pay, but I think it did happen and I think he was pissed about it.
Also a guess, but I know that he ran into 'trouble' for comments (and an arrest I believe) about marijuana. The story was that he was 'caught' with a bag and he claimed he only used it 'sprinkled on his cereal' or something like that.
Lee walked off from the Expos following the release of his good friend 2B Rodney Scott. In the act of doing so he ripped his uniform in half. This was following his trade from the Red Sox who were also growing tired of his ways (feud with Zimmer 'the gerbil', pot use, and so on). No other MLB club offered him a contract. He soon after formed the New England Gray Sox - a barn-storming team that included himself, Scott and former Red Sox hero Bernie Carbo, Mark Fidrych, and George Foster.
That's a hell of a story, but it isn't what I'm looking for. I'm looking for an 'episode' if you will in which he remained on his team but voluntarily suspended his pay.
The scoring for my league is as follows:
1 point per R, RBI, SB
.5 point per TB
-.5 point per SO
10 point per W
-5 point per L
5 point per S
1 point per K
-1 point per ER
When friend Bernie Carbo was sold to the Cleveland Indians, Lee went on an unofficial strike-jumping the club and going home. He was finally found by Red Sox president Haywood Sullivan and told that he would be docker a day's pay (about $500). Lee responded "Make it fifteen hundred. I'd like to have the whole weekend."<br><br><span class=gensmall>Accepted as answer by JnB987 on Mon Apr 14, 2003 5:53 pm EST.</span>
