Strategy feedback -- 5x5 H2H League

Postby 9er Fan » Wed Apr 02, 2003 6:29 pm

My strategy in this 5x5, H2H league was the following:

1. Draft no starting pitchers
2. Draft a great lineup, lots of closers, and top-notch middle relievers
3. Win saves, WHIP, ERA (and lose SO & wins) almost every week
4. Win most batting categories every week

What do you think (I'm planning on nabbing another big SB guy for my bench)?

How many teams are in the league? If it's not too shallow, I'd say the lineup is solid enough to back up the startegy. The big question, though, is whether you have daily or weekly lineup changes. Dialy changes will lead to a lot of interesting micromanaging when other teams attempt to counter you...

Another question is whether saves are worth going after, or if players like MacDougal would be best left on the bench so as not to jeopardize era and whip.

I like you lineup. The problem I have with this strat is that you can't guarantee that you win ERA and WHIP. One bad day from one of your closers and you could lose 4 out of 5 pitching cats. And with Mesa, Urbina, MacDougal and Colome this is going to happen. Then you have to sweep hitting and take saves to get a win.

Yeah Pogo, that's the one thing that worries me about this strategy. I will definitely lose wins and SOs, but am not guaranteed to win ERA and WHIP. MacDougal and Colome are expendable, I'll probably end up dropping one or both for solid middle relievers, and I dropped Nixon for Crawford (SBs). Anyway, I'm going to stick with this for at least the 1st quarter of the season before I panic ;-) so we'll see.

Also, it's a 10 team league with daily lineup changes.

Personally, I'd keep MacDougal (has looked sharp so far, albeit against a struggling White Sox team), but drop Colome in favor of someone like Juan Cruz or even Lance Carter. Cruz looked amazing in his first appearance, and he was good last year, at least until his confidence was shattered (probably by lack of run support - he was something like 1-8 as a starer, with around a 2.80 ERA). If Colome gets a save or two in the next week, you may be able to trade him for an OF upgrade.
