Within the last month I've had the opportunity to re-watch Field of Dreams; The Natural; and Bang the Drum Slowly.
I had forgotton much of The Natural. It was good, but not as good as I remembered - I didn't like the way they didn't really deal with his 16 year abscence from baseball and how a top pitcher comes back as a top hitter.
I had forgotten everything about Bang the Drum Slowly except that it was about 2 buddies, one of whom is dying (kind of a baseball version of Brian's Song). It was good, but baseball was kind of secondary to the story.
Field of Dreams was better than I remembered - it's hard to explain it, it sort of takes you back to a time when life was simpler and so was baseball, when players played for the sheer joy of the game. It captures the magic of the game and the bond between fan and player. The game seems somehow more majestic, each play, whether it be a hit, or a pitch, or a catch, or a throw, seems to be a work of art, not simply a routine play. It's hard to describe this movie; that's the best I can do. Definitely #1.
Still holds the MLB record for Grand Slams with 23
One thing I give the folks who worked on the movie version of Field of Dreams huge amounts of credit for is that although some elements were changed, the film is as strong as the book. That's pretty rare...

I agree it wasn't really a "baseball" movie, but I did enjoy it. I'm actually a big Costner fan, so I like almost all his movies, except for the Postman, or whatever that train-wreck of a movie was called

Also didn't like it because he threw the perfect game against the Yankees.
