As you can tell, I've had some fun researching some old rules and practices. Here's one more:

From 1876 to 1871, if an umpire couldn't see a play being made, what was he supposed to do?

Hint: instant replay isn't the answer... :-D

Correct! Believe it or not, the ump was instructed to discuss this with either spectators (and we know how objective the fans are) or the players themselves.

Can you imagine what would happen if they tried this today? :-D
