League Dispute on Invalid Lineup

Postby FBFAN70 » Wed Jun 02, 2004 11:24 am

Howdy everyone - I was hoping the good folks here wouldn't mind giving me their opinion on a situation that has arisen in our league. As is the case with most leagues, valid lineups need to be set each week and it is the owners responsibility to make sure they are valid. We have a situation this week in that the current leader (in a 12 team league), made some roster changes on Sunday night, but didn't make sure his roster was valid for the start of Monday. This means that for now his roster is invalid for the week of 5/31.

Here is the issue - as of today (Wednesday), he hasn't been accumulating any points this week and wants to have the commish correct his lineup from Monday so he receives the points he feels he deserves.

Do you think this owner should be allowed to retro correct his lineup from earlier this week or should he take ownership of his mistake and lose the week? I'm curious what you guys think.

Thanks in advance!

I have never played in weekly leeagues nor have I played in a league where you can set an invalid lineup except for Smallworld. In Yahoo, you just set it and forget it (Ronco anyone??). :-D

If everyone knew of this rule before the season and he just made a mistake, then I say that he's SOL. If this mistake is solely based on his oversight, then he's SOL.

Is this a league comprised of friends or strangers ?
Is there cash involved ?
Has this happened before ?

If its a free league made up of friends I would let him slide.
If its a money league there should be some sort of penalty.

Hey everyone - thanks for the replies.

It is a money league among friends and friends of friends.

A valid lineup is as follows:

2 C
1 1B
1 2B
1 SS
1 3B
1 MI
1 CI
5 OF
2 U
10 P

His lineup included 2 MI and 0 SS. It was obviously an honest mistake, but since it is a money league and it really is the owners responsibility to make sure his lineup is valid (at least in my opinion).

Also - I don't believe this has happened before (an invalid lineup being submitted for the week).

I've played in this type of league for about seven years and I've only seen it happen once.

It's the fantasy equivalent of batting out of order.

If he gets away with it, others may justifiably try to do the same and you have mayhem (i.e. Oh, and by the way I hadn't planned to sit Dunn last night, Mr. Commish. That was just an oversight, can you please correct it).

That's why the rule is in place.

If 11 others guy can get it right for X number of weeks, it can't be all that difficult. It's a pretty clear rule.

I'd be surprised this service does not have the automated "Invalid Roster" message. Almost all leagues do. If this one does, then that further reason to deny the request.

You snooze you lose.

If you decided on the rules to have a valid lineup at the start of the week, and specified the positions to use, there shouldn't be any argument about him having an invalid lineup. Since his was invalid, it should BE invalid.

Does your site tell you if you have an invalid lineup? I know ours at cbssportsline does. A great big yellow banner pops up at the top of the screen alerting you to the fact that your lineup is invalid. If this is similar in your league, then he REALLY has no argument.

He shouldn't get the points, especially since the rules were agreed on at the beginning of the season.

You are correct. We're on CBS Sportsline so it does tell you at the top of the screen that your lineup is invalid.

Personally if you want to be reasonable about it I would just set his lineup without the 2 MI and let him get the points from his other positions. He loses 2 players stats which is painful enough, but he doesn't throw away the week. If you want to be a stickler for the rules because money is involved then not letting him get any points works.
