In 1885, home plate could be made of two materials. Hard rubber was one; what was the other?

Themetties have it! Kudos - that was pretty obscure. This ruling only lasted two years, by the way; thereafter, rubber became the only plate material.

I'm not sure about wood - it's possible that this material was used earlier or for unofficial games, but the only official options were rubber or marble.

Marble... can you imagine? :-D
