I know this topic has been covered many times, but its mostly been in reference to Vlad. What we should now do is rate Beltran as he compares to the following:
He has been struggling the last month, but if you check out his career split stats, you find something incredible:
before the all-star break: .272 BA, .789 OPS
after the all-star break: .307 BA, .894 OPS
That is a huge jump in the only comparable stats (there are more games in the first half, so total stats dont compare). So where does he rate along with those players?
I want to preface this by saying that I generally take position scarcity/abundance into too much consideration , so rating Beltran this high shows you what I really think of him as a player. Anyway that being said I would rate them:
A-Rod - Pujols
Soriano - Beltran
Rolen
Vlad
Maggs
Manny
Thome
Abreu
Bonds
Logic - if you care:
A-Rod and Pujols are interchangable based on numbers IMO especially with his move to the Bronx but A-Rod getting the slight nod because of position eligibility putting them in their own class IMO. That being closely followed by Soriano (mainly because of position scarcity) and Beltran since they put up similar type numbers as far as power potential, SB, etc. Then I would say Rolen and Vlad could go either way really, I just happen to be a STL fan and 3B while deep isn't as deep as OF. Then Maggs and Manny are OF therefore their value is slightly less IMO. Thome, Abreu, and Bonds are roughly equal fantasy wise, unless of course BB and/or OBP is counted then Bonds goes up slighty, but not much really. Just my $.02.
The real point of this post was to find out how Beltran compares with Abreu. They are similar, as they are both 5 category players. I personally think that Abreu is only slightly worse than Beltran. What do you guys think?
As had been discussed at times, i do not think that Beltran will put up big power numbers. Expecting just above 30HR would be fair. The rest in the list are favored to put up more than 40, with maybe a lower chance for Soriano.
Beltran will probably put up 30-40 HR's...even if he only gets 30, he'll be more valuable than Vlad. Vlad could get 50 HR's and I'd take Beltran over him. The 40-50 SB's Beltran will get will make pretty much anything Vlad can conceivably do inferior, unless he can get some SB's. He's basically a Manny Ramirez clone now, and Beltran is undisputedly better than Ramirez for fantasy. How long will it take for people to realize that? Who knows.
As for the mentions of Rolen.....Lowell has been better for the past 2 seasons, and in a lot less games. Why no love But I still love getting him as a steal in all my leagues
