D-Lowe leaves game hurt

Derek Lowe - S - BOS Buy Red Sox Tickets

Derek Lowe left today's game in the sixth inning with an apparent right thumb injury.
Lowe started bleeding from either a cut or a blister on the thumb, but that didn't stop manager Terry Francona from leaving him in until he walked back-to-back batters. The sinkerballer was throwing well in the first five innings. He gave up two runs, one on a home run down the right field line that wouldn't have been out in any park except Fenway and another following an infield single, a sac bunt and a second single. He was then charged with five runs while pitching through his thumb problem in the sixth, the final three coming after he left the game. May. 31 - 3:06 pm et

Lowe has been terrible for me this year. Benched him today, and just replaced him with Carpenter.

When that thumb started bothering him he didn't look the same pitching. He was in obivous pain after each pitch and kept wiping that blood all over his pants. From what the commentators were saying it sounds like it's probably a blister. Hopefully Lowe doesn't go all Beckett on owner's. It's definately a shame since he was starting to look a little better today.

Thrash...you're a Red Sox fan and you're GLAD he's hurt? Do the real Red Sox fans a favor, and go root for some other team. Anyone who's ever GLAD someone got hurt is an a-hole, period.

As for Lowe, he's been brutal, no question. He's just not getting much action on the sinker, and if he can't get that baby working, he's not going to be effective. He's survived the season so far based on great run support (seven runs plus per game before today).

Once he's fit to pitch again, I'm not so sure that it wouldn't be wise to let him work more frequently out of the pen. He seems to do better (as do many sinkerballers) when the arm's a little weary. Not sure ths Sox have the replacement starter to try this, but it's an idea that may be worth exploring.
