I happen to have both Valvarde and Chacon

and they have been killing me lately. Can we start this post to update the situation as you hear about it? I already picked up Fuentes from Colorado and Dessens from Arizona.

I *think* scott service is supposed to be closing for 'zona. Don't know about colorado...

Service was announced by Brenley to be the new closer. Was called up yesterday from AAA I believe. Dessens got the save 2nite for an unknown reason.
I think Valverde is still your best bet IMO.

I'm staying well away from D'back closers. Hell it my grandma could pop up.
I mean Scott Service. As has been said Service is called up, announced as the closer and his first opportunity Dessens saves.
He's either the closer or not.
Really who the hell knows.
I picked up Fuentes just in case Chacon goes - but am not even looking at the D'backs.
One advantage could be if Dessens gets a few saves you can put him at SP (if your league splits em) and play an extra closer or reliever for some cheap wins.

From SportingNews:
"Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly said he will use Service as the closer in place of Jose Valverde, at least for a while, The Associated Press reports. Service was 5-0 with eight saves and a 3.68 ERA in 21 appearances.
Fantasy Source spin: So why then did Elmer Dessens get the save on Friday? Service had gotten work the past two days in the minors, so Brenly opted against using him. Service is the closer for sure, and obviously the hot pickup."
Hope that helps

same question as earlier...
Should I bench Valverde or drop him? Will he regain the closer role or is he toast?

There 2 X factors which speak against dumping Valverde right now.
a) How they expect a 38-year-old journeyman AAA player to hold the closer role is a mystery to everyone except Brenley, apparently. However, his vote is the only one that counts.
b) They might give Mantei a shot .. but his arm is shot (for the time being) and his track record is abysmal.
My guess is that Valverde will get another crack at it within the next month. I'm willing to bench him for 3 weeks until we know if Mantei's arm is ok and to see how Service holds up.
One man's opinion ...

I don't think he's toast. Service's call up isn't a diss on Valverde. It's Brenly publicly acknowldging that his bullpen seems incapable of bringing a lead into the 9th inning to necessitate a closer.
I don't think Valverde is toast, but who knows whats gonna happen? Mantei is rehabbing and you've got to think that once he gets the green light health-wise he's gonna get the job from Service, unless Service is light's out, (yeah right). If Mantei sucks (again) we'll be right back at the beginning point of this merry-go-round with Brenly looking over at Valverde.
