i just offered one owner in my league my santana for his zito... they're both doing about the same thus far... i think it's basically a push, but i like zito to bounce back a little more considering he's faced the yanks, halos and rangers already this season...

I think that Santana is genuinely overrated. I took him too early. And I still have him.I got caught up in the herd mentality on draft day.
He seems to suffer from the same mental lapses that haunt Contreras. In both cases no one doubts their ability from the neck down -- but 90% of the game is half mental, as Yogi says.
Right now, I'd say the most comparable player to Santana is Odalis Perez. Perez has a few more years experience/maturity as a starter so he's having a better year. They are both potentially #1s capable of spectacular games -- but they are also prone to inconsistency and the occasional mind-boggling meltdown.
I don't think has the mindset that will allow him to Bulldog his way through a high-pressure game, a la Martinez, Clemens, Schmidt, Halladay, Woods.
i'm either holding on to him or packaging him with jim edmonds to grab moose...
where is ZIG to bash this thread anyway?
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll drown because you forgot to teach him to swim.

BronsonPinchot wrote:"Capable of exploding for a gem any day" has to be one of the dumber things I've read here. If you start a guy who isn't pitching well, chances are he'll have a negative impact on your team. A "gem" here and there is pointless when he gets lit up regularly. Sadly I was foolish enough to select Santana, too early at that, but I can tell you he will NOT be starting on my team until he actually shows some baseball playing ability.
If I didn't feel that santana was capable of producing a great outing "here or there" I wouldn't have him on my roster. you are very lucky to have all SP's that never have rough patches. if you wait until AFTER he "shows you some baseball playing ability" (i assme this means pitching) then that is a wasted start and you are NOT going to be winning any leagues if you are conservative and take no risks.
