This is an auto draft. I know I have the 2nd pick in the draft, and I know the first pick will be Barry Bonds (not the smartest pick in the world I know). Anyways, that leaves me to decide between Vlad, ARod, and Randy Johnson. I have never done head to head so I'm not sure if Randy's 1 start a week is enough to make him worthy of the 2nd pick in the draft. I'm leaning towards Vlad, but there are tons of Out Fielders out there. Then there is ARod, easily the best player at SS, one of the hardest positions to get production from.
in my other league, which is a points league, I took Randy with the 2nd pick, but ARod was taken first. So essentially I took Randy over Vlad...
But this is head to head. So I guess my biggest question, is: Does Randy Johson make enough impact in his one game a week to take him over Vlad or ARod?
Get A-Rod. He's one of the best offensive players in the game and fills one of the hardest positions to find sleepers in. During the season, it's easy to find rookies or breakout players who play in the OF (where Vlad plays), 3B, 1B and a Pitcher but it's tough to find fantasy studs at 2B, SS and C.
Quality pitching is very easy to find. No one compares to RJ or Schilling in K's and Wins (duh) but someone like Jason Schmidt is comparable to other top-tier pitchers like Roy Oswalt.

A-Rod is usually the first guy taken for a good reason. He is the best player to build your team around. Your real decision is who to take with the next to the last pick of the 2nd round.

Take whoever you like best. I would probably take ARod and tend to agree with the position scarcity argument. However, I think way too much emphasis is placed on the first pick. Vlad, ARod, RJ, Bonds...all of the first tier guys are studs who will, unless injured for a significant stretch of the season, post studly numbers.
Drafts are won in the middle to late rounds. You'd be better off focusing on which players are the sleepers, which are likely to come back from off years, which are likely to plummet, which are overvalued. Getting the best possible value with each pick is the key to winning. Monitoring your team for balance as the draft progresses is also important. You don't want to get midway through the draft without taking a pitcher, and then be forced to take Odalis Perez or Cory Lidle as your staff ace. These are bottom of the rotation guys, not anchors.
Pick your favorite player first. As long as it isn't Joe Girardi, you should be fine
PS My draft is Saturday, and I have the first pick. I'm taking ARod.
