Should Greinke be Valued As a Mid-Reliver?

Postby d18Mike » Tue May 25, 2004 6:18 am

Heard this conversation yesterday which is good food for thought -- if the Royals are going trot Greinke out and strictly limit him to 5 possibly 6 innings per game then, then he should be valued alongside the likes of Mota, Lidge, Quantrill, Marte, Hawkins, K-Rod, Shields and others who typically get nearly that many innings per week but more Ks (Quantrill excepted).

Your chances of getting a win in 5 innings of work for KC aren't terrific and perhaps don't outweigh the uncertainity of a rookie and his lack of Ks.

Thoughts on this?

(Obviously a non-issue in keepers where he should be stashed)

Interesting way to look at it. The logic is pretty sound. I've said this elsewhere, but unless you're in a keeper league Greinke is not going to be that valuable this year. I'd guess he gets more wins than most of those MRs and a comparable WHIP but slightly higher ERA and much lower K/IP.
