he was sensational yesterday. i mean it. he looked brilliant. even the pitch that castilla hit over the wall was a good pitch--a little up, but plenty wide...probably a ball, actually.

he's looked at least decent in all of his starts, and could easily have packed in a complete game yesterday--just bowed out so graves could get the reds' save record out of the way. his pitch count was still really low, and he was definitely in control.

i'd still be leery of picking him up, because as a reds fan, it's still hard for me to completely believe in a reds' starter. there's no doubting what he's done, however, and if you have jae seo, for instance, i'd drop him for wilson.

He was one of the most heralded starters ever to come up in a Mets uniform. They were talking about him like he could be the second coming of Seaver in the early 90s. But then... injuries. And more injuries. And more injuries. And when he did pitch, he rarely found his groove.

He has (had) the stuff to be great at one time. But his body keeps breaking down and I don't know if he has the ability to fool hitters for any long stretches. Grab him only if you've got someone awful taking up space on yr roster.

ooh, and the other caveat i just remembered is that with the exception of this last outing, he's had some pitch-recognition problems:

1st time through the order--opp. avg. is .222, era of 1.80
2nd time through the order--opp. avg. is .280, era of 3.32
3rd time through the order--opp. avg. is .304, era of 5.79

now, it bears repeating that in his last start, he looked increasingly powerful as the game progressed. perhaps he has addressed this issue.
