Criag A. Wilson...the Real Deal?

Postby Guest » Mon Jun 17, 2002 1:13 pm

Hello,

I'm in a 4x4 10 team league and just found out Craig Wilson's incredible week last week. Is he worth picking up for a week and if so who should I drop. I am currently 2nd in my league and here is my lineup:

Batting: 10th (BA), 1st (HR), 2nd (RBI), 5th (SB)

Batting:

Ivan Rodriguez, C
Eli Marrero, C
Jeff Bagwell, 1B
Luis Rivas, 2B
Eric Chavez, 3B
A-Rod, SS
Tim Salmon, OF
Austin Kearns, OF
Mosis Alou, OF
Garret Anderson, OF
Vladdy Gurrero, OF

David Eckstien, U
Eric Heniske, U

Should I pick up Wilson?

Is he for real? Yes and no (don't you hate those answers?). He obviously isn't as good as he has been during his surge, nor is he as bad as he was in April and much of May. His average is probably real - .290 to .300 sounds realistic for the rest of the season - but he won't put up consistent power numbers.

If you do decide to pick him up and ride out his hot streak, drop Alou or one of your utility players, choosing whoever you feel you have the best chance of being able to pick up again if Wilson drops back into the pack (this will depend primarily on other teams' needs). Wilson might indeed make a nice gamble now, but my feeling is he won't put up the power numbers you would want from an of or 1b over the long run.

It really depends on your league. He's had three starts at catcher this season. If he's catcher eligible, hop on this bandwagon IMMEDIATELY!!!

I'd say he's much better than Marrero. Drop that guy like a bad habit. If he's not catcher eligible, he's probably not worth it. Alou has looked awful, but he's currently got a 10 game hitting streak. He may be turning it around.

Anyone in your league desperate for a short stop? Maybe trade Eckstein for a solid outfielder? He's good, but you don't really need him with A-Rod on your squad.

If I decide to trade Eckstien, what is his worth? Here are some teams that need shortstops that might be willing to trade an outfielder:

Team #1 (Currently has Guzman at SS)
Sheffield, Gary ATL OF
Williams, Bernie NYY OF
Lee, Carlos CHW OF
Hidalgo, Richard HOU OF
Ward, Daryle HOU OF
Nixon, Trot BOS OF
Erstad, Darin AN OF

Team #2 (Currently has Rich Aurilia at SS)
Jones, Jacque MIN OF
Dye, Jermaine OAK OF
Sosa, Sammy CHC OF
Bonds, Barry SF OF
Jones, Andruw ATL OF
Thomas, Frank CHW U
McLemore, Mark U

Team #3 (Currently has Tony Womack at SS)
Floyd, Cliff FLA OF
Sierra, Ruben SEA OF
Green, Shawn LA OF
Jordan, Brian LA OF
Berkman, Lance HOU OF
Ventura, Robin NYY U
Casey, Sean U

What offers should I make if any?

I don't think the guy who has Aurilia would bite. The other too may. Maybe go for Hidalgo or Erstad? I like Erstad more out of these two, but either may suit you better the Eck, unless you need steals! Keep this in mind. If you need steals, you should keep Eck.

Good advice - I was also thinking in the direction of Hidalgo.

The team with Aurilia may be worth a try anyway, though; if they're worried about his durability, they may cough up utility-only Frank Thomas, especially with so much power on the roster.

Ok, I'm probably not going to trade Eckstein because I need his steals, but what do you think about this trade:

I give: Glavine and Wickman

for

Nen and Green

Is this a fair trade?

Here are the standings:

I'm 2nd Overall (Batting) 10th (BA), 2nd (HR), 3rd (RBI), 5th (SB
(Pitching) 6th (ERA), 2nd (K), 5th (S), 1st (W)

He's 5th Overall (Batting) 7th (BA), 1st (HR). 1st (RBI), 7th (SB)
(Pitching)10th (ERA), 6th (K). 4th (S). 7th (W)

Sounds like a pretty fair deal. The only question is ho wmuch you'll miss Glavine. If the rest of your staff is solid, go for it.

I actually prefer Berkman over Green, but that's just a matter of taste. Soriano would be nice as well.
