for those of us who aren't ready to cut bait and run on schmidt... i say at the very least watch his next couple of starts... if he continues to pitch well and doesnt continue to rack up enormous pitch counts i would say pat yourself on the back and reap the rewards... if he comes back shaky and gets hammered or continues to be left out there to beat up his arm, then i'd say you should cut bait and run...
felipe alou is a moron... first he refuses to bat bonds 3rd... then he repeatedly throws herges out to the dogs in garbage time... and now he tries to send his best pitcher to the ER... i hate his ass...
Yes, I do think Schmidt is among the top FB pitchers, along with Prior (injured), Wood (inured), Brown (an injury waiting to happen) and several others (Johnson, Martinez etc...) with a list of arm-related maladies as long as, well, your arm.
I would never trade anyone on the mere conjecture that they will get injured from throwing too many pitches. That seems to me to be taking overeaction to an extreme.
But to each his own!
BTW, I knew at the beginning of the season that Sosa was prone to very violent sneezes. That's why I didn't draft him, so I do make some exceptions.
I still think thats alot of pitches, regardless of him wanting to stay in or not. Last year I would of been happy with him wanting to stay in, but this year it makes me nervous.
By trading him now for a pitcher of equal value, you are obvioously not losing out, and reducing your risk of injury problems.
If you could get Halladay, Martinez or Johnson you don't think that would be good enough? I guess the problem lies in getting someone to do those trade, more than finding equal value.

It depends on how educated the other owners are. I'd rather have over ten SPs than Schmidt at this point and would avoid him at all costs. Maybe others won't. I have those three listed light years above Schmidt. I'd rather have any of these guys (of course, due to current stats, you may be able to deal Schmidt for one of them, since other than injury risk, his value is pretty high):
P. Martinez
R. Johnson
Prior
Schilling
Oswalt
Halladay
Hudson
Wood
Beckett
Vazquez
Mulder
Zito
That's twelve...in rough order...I have Prior a few slots too high...but he's coming back soon so it may not be that inaccurate.
This is coming from somebody who lost out on Burnett last year.
