Spivey's Down, Need Suggestion on FA Pickup

Postby Guest » Sat Jun 15, 2002 8:11 pm

Hello,

I'm in a 4x4 10 team league and just found out Junior Spivey got put on the 15-day DL. There are many players available that I could pick up to replace him. I am currently 2nd in my league and here is my lineup:

Batting: 10th (BA), 1st (HR), 2nd (RBI), 5th (SB)

Batting:

Ivan Rodriguez, C
Eli Marrero, C
Jeff Bagwell, 1B
Luis Rivas, 2B
Eric Chavez, 3B
A-Rod, SS
Tim Salmon, OF
Austin Kearns, OF
Alex Sanchez, OF
Garret Anderson, OF
Vladdy Gurrero, OF

David Eckstien, U

I have an open Utility spot so I can fill it with any position. Here are the possibilities for pick up on the FA market.

Conine, Jeff
Simon, Randall
Lee, Derrek
Vina, Fernando
Young, Michael
Guillen, Carlos
Hernandez, Jose
Hinske, Eric
Jordan, Brian
Finley, Steve
Moises Alou
Adam Piatt
David Justice

Which one should I pick up that won't make me drop any spots while Spivey is out?

Tough one, with lots of choices worth considering. With your position in the standings, I'd probably play safe and pick up Vina just in case Rivas doesn't work out (the jury on his return is still very much out). Carry two 2b's for a little bit, but reassess the situation soon.

I decided to go with Eric Heiske and hopefully Rivas will work out. If he goes down I can always pick up Vina because I think most of the teams in my league will pass him up. What do you think about my pick up?

I like Hinske a lot, and a backup at 3b can't hurt. Keep an eye on Hinske's hamstring problem, though - it looks like everything's ok, but it'll take a couple games before we know for sure.

Alex Sanchez is Out for a Week

Postby Guest » Sun Jun 16, 2002 11:27 am

Alex Sanchez is probably going to recover for a week so I'm considering dropping him until he's fully recovered. Who do you think I should pick up off FA? If you look at the earlier posts you will see the lists of people that are available. Let me know. Thanks.

Sanchez is back, and he should be your man if you're looking to make up ground in steals. Another blunder or two, however, and he could be riding the pine again. Plus, any kind of hamstring problem isn't good news for a speedster.

Also, it's hard to ignore the way Finley's playing right now, and some of your other options aren't too shabby either. I'd either replace Sanchez now, or give him a day or two so you can see how he behaves on the basepaths. If he looks fine, stick with him; if not, let him go.
