Closer Quandries

Postby Warpigs » Tue May 18, 2004 11:45 am

I know many people are fishing for closers. Two names that seem to be surfacing a lot lately are N. Field and C. Cordero.

Which of the two will win his team's closer role first -- and who will produce the best at that position?

It's discouraging that both play for teams that have struggled on and off this year so far. Field in Kansas City would be my pick considering he has players like Beltran and Sweeney providing run support, but will he ever officially have the closer role to himself?

How long is Biddle's leash in Montreal? Cordero's control is a little off, from what I've read, so realistically, how much more time until he's more of a featured reliever?

Ah. Questions, questions! ;-D

Since Cordero's having a tough time getting it over the plate thus far I think they would turn to Ayala if Biddle starts blowing saves (he hasn't been that bad in save situations)

From what I've read, Biddle has been struggling with saves. This from Fanball dated May 12:

One out. Expos manager Frank Robinson handed the ball to closer Rocky Biddle on Tuesday night with two outs in the ninth inning, asking the reliever to get one out. Instead, Biddle allowed three hits and two runs without retiring a batter. "He got behind hitters, didn't make good pitches and they hit him," Robinson told MLB.com. "All I was asking was to get one out. That's all he had to do. He didn't get it done." Over his last five appearances, Biddle has pitched four innings and allowed 10 hits and 10 runs while striking out none. "It's just a shame that Livan [Hernandez] had to go out there and pitch a heck of a game and I come out and blow it," Biddle said. "I failed tonight. That's the bottom line. I didn't get the job done. I let (Robinson) down. I let the team down, I let my bullpen down. It's pretty much it."

That was his only blown save, he's 8 for 9.

My bad. Figured there were more -- especially looking at his ERA.

Anyway, how about Field? Is he going to get the role anytime soon?

I think he has it now. For the moment anyway. I figure he's a decent pickup but most likely won't close for too long. He'll either mess up and they'll put in Cerada or Macdougal will come back from the minors (likely in my opinion).

If saves were all I needed I would.

I wouldn't pick any of them.

Between Field & Cordero it loks like Field right now has the best shot at getting saves, For all we know he is the closer but KC hasnt had any save opps in a week or so.

neither are real safe options
