Some of you might not know, but this forum has an auto-replacement feature...

Generally it's used to censor "bad" language and to replace e.g. "shit" by *beep*. Since that's slightly dull, we've never used this feature so far, but we recently had an idea that might be a lot of fun: we could replace certain expressions that some people like to use (but most people hate to read) with something more meaningful.

E.g. "fuck you" could become I love you, "stupid" could become unintelligent, etc. Basically we could also have the expressions turn back at the poster, but of course the result should be funny without being as insulting as the original text.

If you like the idea, feel free to make suggestions - maybe we can come up with a set of replacements that not only improve the language used on the board, but are, above all, hilarious and entertaining.

thats a funny idea but if i really wanted to use foul language i could use euphemisms like "fuk you" for "fuck you", or stoopid for stupid, kinda *beep* people already do at other forums and online games that have filters . but it'll still be really funny tho- i say go for it.

I don't like censoring posts, but if you guys feel it's neccesary, go ahead. If an idiot (is that an acceptable word?) posts something that isn't appropriate, and is only meant to offend people, then delete the post (I myself have had this happen) instead of changing what people have already said. Most people around here have enough sense not to use very foul language. But if mild cursing is used in the right situation I don't think it offends anybody. I'm more for deleting a post if it's inappropriate than altering it.

Actually the idea is really just for the heck of it, the "censor" part wasn't meant seriously by any means. Forget replacing "stupid" if you like, but there are certain words and phrases that nobody likes seeing at the Cafe, and I thought that if they show up, replacing them automatically by something really funny might be better that having a flaming thread or everyone waiting and screaming for the mods to clean the mess away.

(And of course the altering should be either marked or *marked* to make clear it's been altered - no intention to make it seem like the original poster actually wanted to say that.)

In any case, I think the idea isn't bad. Obviously, it wouldn't be geared toward mild cursing (as LBJ said), but it might help inject some humor into situations that could otherwise devolve into flaming.

As much as I am not in favor of censorship....There are certain words and/or phrases that don't belong in public viewing....Keeping in mind that not everyone that uses the board are able to view "R" rated movies...as far as the 'mild-ones'...no problem letting them slide...but the 'major ones'...would be better changed...

and I like Blue Ducks too....
