Johnson or McGriff?

Postby timkell » Fri Jun 14, 2002 7:58 pm

Who do you like for the rest of the season? Nick Johnson or Fred McGriff?

Here's my scoring:
Head-to-Head Point Values
Single 1 point
Double 2 points
Triple 3 points
Home Run 4 points
RBI 1 point
Run 1 point
Base on Balls 1 point
Stolen Base 2 points

I'm in head to head, so total points is all that matters. No negatives, and there are no fielding points.

I have McGriff, and Johnson is still a free agent. Guys I would consider waiving to pickup Johnson are:
Mike Cameron
Austin Kearns
Fred McGriff

What do you think?

Interesting question. Similar players in terms of stats (with both having a chance of turning it up a notch), very different situations.

McGriff's downside is age and fears about his health, as well as a weak lineup.

Johnson, on the other hand, could still find himself losing significant playing time if the Yankees decide to make another deal. The Yanks are certainly sending mixed signals about how highly they value Johnson. A trade to another team also isn't out of the question.

This is probably as close to a coin-flip decision as it gets, since the risks are nearly impossible to gauge right now. I'd stick with McGriff, but that's really more of a hunch than anything I can put my finger on.

Thanks, Arlo. By your response, I assume you would also stick with Kearns and Cameron over Johnson?

I've got plenty of first base and outfield options, so position scarcity doesn't matter. I just want the guys who will produce the most. I'm beginning to lose faith in Cameron, but I expect he'll blow up sooner or later. I'd hate to see him do that on someone else's team!

Yes, I'd stick with what you have. If Johnson shows signs of putting it all together, then go ahead and grab him, but now isn't the time yet.
