Hawkins is the Closer???

ESPN Insider : Given manager Dusty Baker's remarks after the game, indicating that Borowski was simply rusty and had good velocity, we'll assume that the closer role is still Borowski's for the most part until we hear otherwise. But one or two more rough Borowski outings is probably all it would take for Hawkins to take over at least a share of the job.


What do you make of this?

How valuable is Hawkins if given the job?

Do you dump Borowski or Pick him up off waivers, if available?

Exactly what most people thought. It's JoBo's job but he is on a tight rope and will most likely not get be in there every save opp.

About as valuable as Dotel. More value than most closers, but not quite the upper echelon.

Do you dump Borowski or Pick him up off waivers, if available?

JoBo is still valuable until the time comes that there is an actual change. No need to drop him, and worth grabbing if you have room for a guy who can save 30 games with a 3+ ERA.

I think you guys are off. I think the job is now Hawkins. Look at the last three games.

5/13---Hawkins has to come in for the game's final out to save Borowski's ass
5/14---The Cubs have the game in hand 6-1 and use Borowski for the 9th
5/15---The Cubs are in a close game and Hawkins gets the final out in the 8th and takes care of the 9th

With Hawkins now stepping up I think the job is his to lose (especially with Borowski's 6+ ERA).

As for dumping him, that's up to you. Certianly this could just be a 'cooling off' period for Borowski so he can get his head together, but I doubt it.

Not yet...................but almost. Have patience. He isn't quite as good as Dotel, IMO (I hadhim ranked as about the #6/#7 closer preseason), but borderline top 10...or if you want to be conservative, top 15.

To quote Strong Bad here, you know NOTHING! Baker is loyal to his pitchers and will kep JoBo in the closers role until he blows a couple of saves. Borowski wasnt used on the 15th b/c he had pitched twice in the past 2 days. Until I read in the paper that Dusty has switched closers, JoBlow( ) is still the closer.

hopefully the subject of this thread will be accurate in a week or so, although hawkins' struggles as a closer are well documented and may contribute to dusty's hesitancy.
