I wonder if any Major Leaguers actually play any fantasy baseball. Or even if any managers or coaches do. If they did, maybe it would be like a Pete Rose scandal. Can't you just see it....Jimmy Williams found guilty of benching Morgan Ensberg because his fantasy baseball rival owns him. Ha ha ha, Yes, I am an Ensberg owner. But, really, I wonder if Matt Herges knew the other day that he one the week for me with a late save? If they knew about fantasy baseball, maybe they would steal more! Ha ha ha, what a funny concept.
I proposed this theory for the reason as to why the M's don't give Freddy Garcia any run support last night. One person screams wolf false alarm, but two.... I'm calling shennanegins!
I was thinking about this the other day from a players perspective. I wonder if they see how they rate fantasy wise, that would be pretty funny I think.
im sure they hear it all the time "hey, perez i got you starting today on my fantasy team"
they see the commercials regularly, and im sure its spiked most of the guys curiousity. im pretty sure they know how it works, and i wouldnt put it past some of the guys to actually participate in leagues.
a lot of them play fantasy ball. i have met a couple st. louis cardinals, and discussed fantasy ball at length. in fact, i had this dialogue with one of them:
"do you have me on your fantasy team?"
"...um, yeah..."
"ME TOO!"
it was a strange moment, made only slightly stranger by the following:
"did you have me active on my start last week?"
"of course."
"sorry about that. i totally f*cking sucked. i had this blister from BP."
"it's ok. you'll make up for it down the road, right?"
"i hope so."
hilarious, but it was too strange for me to laugh at the time. reflecting on the experience, now, yeah--i'm laughing.
Say that Adam Dunn is facing Matt Herges in the 9th inning and the Giants lead by 1 run. Now Dunn plays fantasy baseball and needs a save to win the weak, just so happens he has Herges in his starting lineup. If you were Dunn, what would you do?
Why did you even ask that, Dunn would want to win a real game, more than he would want to get a save for his fantasy baseball game. He would try to jack it out, just like he always does.
