Haha...good point. I don't see any way the Giants cut him, though I'm sure they wish they could. Maybe some experts will give some input to the actual numbers, but I thought the penalty is half of his salary or something to that effect. Anyone?
MLB doesn't have a salary cap so I don't think there is a penalty for cutting him. They have to eat his guaranteed contract whether they keep or cut him AFAIK.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Interesting, I always thought there was a penalty (even though there's no cap)...guess not...thanks for the info.
If he doesn't play at all this season, they can collect something like 60% of his salary from insurance, and if they cut him they wouldn't be able to collect on that so cutting him would make no sense. I think his career is probably over anyway.
I don't think he is going to make it back this year. I mean the man has been out 2 years and has had 3 surgeries! If he made a comeback how long until he regains his stuff if that is even possible? I don't see how much trade value he has, any team would have to take on that big salary and hope he makes a recovey? I just don't see it.
