Catchers and Closers

Postby jwynsma » Tue Mar 25, 2003 10:52 pm

I'm in a 10-team 5x5 Roto league which fields 2 C, 5OF, 2U, and 9P. We are allowed 2 reserve players. In a live draft, I more or less punted the closer category and didn't have what I felt was a good opportunity to get a top catcher. Feel pretty good about my balance otherwise, but wondering if I should still try to trade to address those positions--or wait for waiver opportunities later.

Here's my team:
C-Lieberthal, Barrett
1B-Thome
2B-B. Boone
SS-Renteria
3B-A. Boone
OF-Guerrero, Giles, Floyd, Dye, Kearns
U-M. Byrd, A. Ramirez
Reserve-E. Marrero
SP-Oswalt, Morris, Halladay, Burnett, Ramon Ortiz, Nomo
RP-S. Williamson, S. Stewart, B. Looper
Reserve-R. Lopez (Burnett currently reserved)

Also, would you consider any other combination of reserves?

I wouldn't worry about upgrading your catching unless a great opportunity presents itself. Your guys aren't flashy, but they'll get the job done, especially if you can take advantage of Marrero's hot streaks every once in a while. With two catcher slots, you should actually be above average.

I also wouldn't worry about saves. You have three players who, the way things stand now, are slated to be their teams' primary closers, and that's pretty good. Again, the names aren't as flashy as some, but they'll get the job done. Upgrading here might be easier than at catcher - it might be worth making an offer or two. If you don't get a trade you like, don't worry about it and keep watching the wire.

No gripes about your reserves, either...

Thanks for the feedback. Any other holes anyone might see?
