May 8 For this first time since injuring his right Achilles' tendon, Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra took batting practice on Saturday. He told the Associated Press that there is no specific timetable for his return and that he would endure a rehab assignment in the minors before joining the team. "You can't just jump into the big leagues as much as you'd like to think you can,'' he told the AP. ''You need to face live pitching.''
