Roster Churning

Postby Patella Tendon » Wed May 05, 2004 2:37 pm

Last year I played in a Yahoo Winners HTH league.

I was easily in first place and my opponent start picking up pitchers the day before a good matchup and dropping the pitchers replacing them the next day based on the next day's matchup.

Needless to say - he caught and passed me playing this way and this soured me on HTH leagues this year.

Is this what you call roster churning?

Is it is is this really frowned upon by Yahoo commisioners?

How do you complain about it?

It's called spot starting, and no, as long as there is an IP limit, it's not a cheap strategy. It can work well if you know what you're doing...it can also backfire completely.

some people prefer this strategy, and it can work for some. but for others, its a recipe for disaster.

Im in a private 14 team league, & last year "spot starting" got out of control , we all agreed . So this year we went w k/9 & era, whip, w-L ratio so there reall is no need & we do not allow it. It's much more fun this year

i have heard that strategy described as roster churning or streaming before. now it seems people are calling that spot starting and roster churning is something else.

i dont care for it since in my mind it seems to take the skill out of the game. you win by having quantity over quality. it is legal as long as there arent any rules against it. since i do not care for it i enter leagues that prohibit it or hinder it in some way such as k/9 and other quality categories or transaction limits (although personally i dont like transaction limits).

If you still want to enjoy the H2H format you could either switch to weekly lineup changes or set a cap on the number of moves that can be made during the season (although this last suggestion wouldn't stop people from roster churning in the playoffs if they didn't make many moves during the reg season)...a more simple option would just be to join a league where everybody agrees not to do it...more sportsmanlike. :-)

If he was using the starters, then no, Yahoo doesn't frown upon it, but it's an extremely cheap way to attempt to win. It's not the way the game was designed to be played and the league should adopt rules to prevent that from happening. A max innings cap and/or limited roster moves would do the trick.

*Note--Rules changes should only happen in the offseason though. Too late for changes this year.

If he was just picking the guys up and dropping them without using them in order to keep them off everyone else's teams, then yes, Yahoo does frown upon that and can revoke his fantasy league privilidges. Just report him directly to Yahoo and they will take care of the rest. ;-)

firstly, as long as he was making the startes, it is not roster churning.

Secondly... jbones -- does that mean I can draft a couple of stud pitchers and two or three relievers and win pitching in your league if I make the right choices? I mean... with no countables you have to have IP minima -- what are they?
