Newbie just finished... looking for any advice!

Postby Madjammin » Sun Mar 23, 2003 11:50 pm

Hello...

I'm in a 12 team Roto league.
Batters: h/ab, R, 1b, 2b, 3b, hr, rbi, sb, bb, k, tb
Hitters: IP,w,l, cg, sho, sv, h, er, hr, k, WHIP

C: Posada
1B: Durazo, Erubiel
2B: Bellhorn, Mark
3B: Spiezio, Scott
SS: Rollins, Jimmy
OF: Bonds, Barry
OF: Williams, Bernie
OF: Sheffield, Gary
UTL: Burks, Ellis
UTL: Mondesi, Raul

SP: Lowe, Derek
SP: Garcia, Freddy
RP: Gagne, Eric
RP: Nen, Robb
P: Vazquez, Javier
P Ortiz, Russ
P: Graves, Danny
Bench: Rueter, Kirk
Bench: Remlinger, Mike
Bench: Astacio, Pedro

It seems I'm pretty weak at SP... and my hitting could probably use a little more tweaking, but I'm not certain. Overall... what do you think... and is there something I could trade, add/drop to help my weak spots/enhance my strong spots?

Thanks in advance

Jim

You do seem a little weak at SP, especially since I do not believe in Lowe. Garcia, Vasquez and Ortiz are good, but Rueter is the type of guy I only think you can afford to have if you have one of the stud pitchers, which you have none of......however I like your relievers.

Line-up seems pretty decent if unspectacular. I really don't like your 2B/3B combo; nothing good can come of that, however, your OF is pretty impressive, although Mondesi is just about worthless. You have some injury questions: Durazo is bound to be hurt sometime, Posada will not play every game, Shef always seems to have something nagging and Burks is just plain old. Overall you are not particularly strong in any batting stat. You don't have enough power or steals and you have a lot of middle/back of the order guys, so you won't be scoring as many runs as some other owners. You do however have several guys who will hit for average, Bonds/Durazo/Shef/Williams/Posada/maybe Burks and Spiezio....

My personal advice (and others may disagree) is to try to package Lowe and sombody else to try to shore up your SP or middle IF (or both). I think that would make your team significantly more formidable......

Hope this helps.......

Another Question...

Postby Madjammin » Fri Mar 28, 2003 4:18 pm

I'm thinking about picking up Randell Simon for a 1st Base help?

Do you think he is worth it? Or is he too old to make a difference?

I also picked up Hoffman and threw him on my DL. Do you think he will pitch the same after the All-star break?

Thanks

Jim

Simon is decent. He swings at everything, so if you're league counts K's against batters (like mine) then he is not so terrific. He'll probably be good for around 25 HRs and a 280-ish average. Believe it or not, he is actually going to a better line-up (relatively speaking) and might be able to drive in some runs hitting somewhere in the vicinity of Giles......

Hoffman is worth a DL spot. It's really too early to say if he'll pitch the same; do I think he'll be a good pitcher still? Yes, just not sure how long it will take him to get back to form......

Try to get rid of Bellhorn, Spiezio and Remlinger. Spiezio is crap, not a big points getter. Remlinger isn't the closer, no need for a setup guy. Bellhorn had a decent year, but won't duplicate it. Don't pick up Randall Simon, he only hits for average, no speed, only a singles hitter.
You need SP help, as you know. Garcia is good, not great (injury prone.) Lowe won't have another year like that. No way! Graves will be this year's Lowe. Great pitcher. Vazquez is good, should get 12-13 wins, same as Ortiz.
Overall, your team should be decent, not great. I would see if anyone is interested in Barry. Take some offers for him. Who knows? Get a good OF, good SP, and a good 3B for him. 3 Really good players are better than 1 Great.
Good luck

cool...

Thanks for all the info.... But I do have a few follow up questions...

When you say get 3 good players for 1 great player (barry), who would you classify as "good" other than "great" (mostly a "good" sp and a "good" 3b/1b)

Also... I have Pedro Astacio and he just went on the DL, and I picked up Hoffman and put him on the DL... but my league only has 1 DL spot. What should I do in that situation?

And... when you say get rid of some of your players... are you suggesting that I should try to trade them away... or just drop them?

Thanks again everyone...

Jim

P.S. Anyone have a suggestion for some FA type players that might help me out at 1b/3b?

Drops?

Postby Madjammin » Tue Apr 01, 2003 11:41 am

I got 3 of my pitchers on the DL... and only one DL spot!

Should I keep Asticio or Hoffman on my team. I am defentily keeping Nenn on the DL.

Thanks...
