anyone know why Crawford is getting caught stealing more?

Postby jebatzel » Sun May 02, 2004 3:34 am

last year he only got caught 10 times all year with 55 steals.

This year he has 13 steals and has been caught 5 times already.

Roberts for the Dodgers has a lot better rate than him now.

anyone have ideas?

I would attribute it to better awareness by the teams that play the Rays. Everyone now knows that they can kill you on the basepaths, and Crawford is by far the SB leader on the team..and maybe in the league. I think it's just a matter of their competitiors being better prepared.

probably hard to know is unless you actually watch rays games, but is he getting caught napping at first or they nailing him at 2nd?

Not sure, I haven't seen a Rays' game yet this year. I take it your league counts SB% or CS, or else you wouldn't be concerned with his 13 SBs.

actually they don't in the league I have him in.

I am tied with 2 steals in my head to head league.

no one else on my roster is stealing.

I guess I was spoiled the week before when he had 3 in one game.

his 2 steals are from Mike Lowell and K. Matsui

I just hate losing a stat when I know I have one of the top SB guys.

Well Ive seen him 2 or 3 times when he's been caught and it was him napping at first, and getting picked off. The announcers were really dissapointed saying a man with Crawfords speed doesnt need to get an excellent jump like Crawfords trying to do.

"Scouts and executives say Devil Rays LF Carl Crawford, 22, is on the verge of stardom. "He's really coming on," a scout says. "He finally has figured out that he has to be Matty Alou. He doesn't have to hit home runs. His value to the team is to go the other way and run like hell." Crawford, the A.L. stolen base leader in 2003, still has room to grow: The first three times he was caught stealing, he was nabbed on pickoffs. . . ."

He's still young and perfecting his craft when it comes to SB's, he will keep getting better though.
