Raf Soriano may be starter

Postby jbones733 » Thu Apr 29, 2004 11:23 am

Ryan Franklin struck out nobody last year, and is showing he's a middle reliever this year. Rafael Soriano owners take note, this is where the rotation spot becomes open. Don't you wonder why the Mariners have him in AA ball startinig games and buliding up arm strentgh ??

I wouldn't count on it. From Rotowire . . .

Soriano will not be starting when he returns to the club, manager Bob Melvin reiterated Tuesday to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He's been working on improving his arm strength after a spring injury. "Soriano was a dominant guy in the bullpen," Melvin said. "We need him there. We're not looking for him as a starter." If an extra starter is needed, lefty Ron Villone, a starter last season for Houston, probably would be the first to get the call. Soriano will return probably about May 4.

An important thing to remember about Soriano is that he's not exactly chomping at the bit to get a chance to start. He's stated several times that he doesn't want to be a starter and that he'd prefer to spend his enitre career as a relief pitcher.

The Mariners aren't playing fantasy baseball. Strikeouts don't matter to them. Runs do. And Ryan Franklin had a 3.57 ERA last year while averaging a very good 6.7 IP per start. His career ERA is 3.84. And while he has struggled the first month of the season, one of those starts was at Texas and he dominated the Angels at Anaheim.
