Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Richie Sexson left Wednesday's loss against the Chicago Cubs with a left shoulder injury.
Sexson was batting in the bottom of the eighth inning when he swung and missed at a pitch by LaTroy Hawkins before crumbling in pain. He exited and his at- bat was finished by Carlos Baerga.
Immediately after the game, Arizona manager Bob Brenly said Sexson was headed to the disabled list -- a statement that was later amended after a conference with the team doctor.
The injury, initially diagnosed as a strained left shoulder, will be re- evaluated after an MRI Thursday, at which time a decision will be made regarding Sexson's status.
Sexson, acquired this past off-season in a nine-player trade with Milwaukee, is currently tied for the National League lead in home runs with nine, and is second to Scott Rolen in runs batted in with 22.
