500 Walks

Postby JuiceMonkey » Wed Apr 28, 2004 11:52 pm

Barry Bonds just got intentionally walked for the 500th time in his career. Although I am a Giants fan and biased in some eyes, I think he is one of the most feared hitters of all time, this stat being one of the most important considerations. When looking at different stats, Ruth seems to have the edge in alot of categories but there are so many considerations about the ages in which these two played, its hard to compare.

There will never be a consensus for the greatest player of all time... but I would like to hear people's opinions on feared hitters and why.

Note: I am not trying to start or hear discussions on steroids (although I will agree it is a consideration in todays age). In America, especially in SF, you are innocent until proven guilty.

The last 3 years Bonds has been the greatest hitter ever. It's hard to believe a 40 yr old guy is the best hitter ever right now. The only time he strikes out now is when the ump calls a ball 8 inches off the plate for a called third strike.

The only critique I can give against Bonds as a hitter is he probably leads all time MLB in haveing his off the wall doubles turned into a single because he was too busy watching the ball to run the bases. He has toned that down in recent years at least.
