What are his chances of becoming the closer for Arizona any time soon? Valverde has pitched in 11 innings, while Mantei has only pitched in 5 innings. But, Valverde still has not had a save opportunity this season. Im not really sure, but it looks to me like Mantei's job is pretty safe, at least for quite some time (probably until Mantei gets traded, if he ever does). Valverde is taking up a spot on my roster and there are other batters that would probably help me more at this point. But, the waivers are picked over, so he is my best choice for a closer without having to trade. I will make a trade for another closer soon, but I still am curious as to what will happen with Valverde.

Valverde and Mantei have both been lit up this year. V could have had a chance at the closers job, but he's blown it for now.

Is there anything else to it? Unless Mantei gets traded or put on the DL, the job is his.

I don't agree that Valverde has blown his chance at the closer job. Mantei just hasn't lost it yet.
Yes, Valverde was lit up the first game of the season, but excluding that game, he has a 1.80 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP, and 9 strikeouts in 10 innings. He's also got me 4 holds. He does show a little wildness at times.

Agreed there. Apparently some conspiracy theorists here think Mantei has lost his pitching ability?

Valverde had one bad inning, but has been stellar otherwise.

Yeah, the homerun he gave up to Hollandsworth last night was stellar.
