San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Atlanta Braves left fielder Chipper Jones was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to a strained right hamstring.
The move is retroactive to April 19 and is Jones' first trip to the DL since 1996. He was expected to miss at least five-to-seven days originally, but because of injuries to other players the Braves need extra bodies.
Atlanta's Eli Marrero has the flu and first baseman Julio Franco is on the DL with an inner-ear infection.
Infielder Mike Hessman was recalled from Triple-A Richmond to take Jones' spot.
Jones suffered the injury in a 3-2 win against the Florida Marlins on April 18 when chasing down a fly ball in the left-center field gap. He hasn't played since.
The 31-year-old Jones, a former National League MVP and one of the elite outfielders in baseball, is batting .314 with three homers and six RBI this season.
