Should the Mariners Acquire Griffey Junior?

Postby Ry-Guy » Mon Apr 26, 2004 5:56 pm

I think the M's need to bolster there offense and Griffey Jr. is a viable option. Getting Junior would create a major presence in the Mariners' lineup and could get them back to their winning ways. They wouldn't have to give too much up and they may get Cincy to eat most of his contract.

If Griffey won't help the M's what player realistically can?

This coming from one of the biggest Griffey fans out there....no, in the long run it would be an absolutely terrible move for the M's. The Mariners need youth in their offense, not a high contract veteran. Cincy won't eat most of his contract, why would they eat the contract if they can just keep him? The best I could see them taking on, is half of it. But he is finally starting to get some respect in Cincy...the fans are coming around to the point where they don't boo him anymore. Trading him would be trading the franchise's best player...and basically admitting they have no chance in the NL central this year, causing ticket sales to drop.

As you can tell, I have considered the scenario very well...b/c my decision on what round to draft Griffey rested on if he would be allowed to DH or not.

Griffey is my favorite player of all time and I say no, its not worth it. It'll sell more tickets, if anything, but hes too much of a risk and gets payed too much for such a risky player.

Sean Tracey has my apologies, we all know Ozzie Guillen is an idiot. I'm rooting for you!

i think they should trade for someone else... like a new GM
Manny Ramirez....$20 million
Pedro Martinez....$17.5 million
Curt Schilling...$12 million (and a $2 million bonus)
Never hearing a Yankee fan chant 1918 again...priceless.

Kearns OUT

Postby Ry-Guy » Tue Apr 27, 2004 12:37 am

Now with Kearns out, the Reds probably need to hold onto Griffey. Oh well, here comes Wily Mo Pena!

Once Griffey left Seattle, they became great. Weird how a team loses the best OF, best infielder, and best starting pitcher (Griffey, A-Rod, Unit) and becomes by far the best team in baseball. I think it would be a mistake for any team to get Griffey at this point. Unless it's a team like the Mets who could get some publicity out of it, and they also don't mind wasting money on washed up stars.
