SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS - After winning three straight contests the SkyChiefs have hit a bit of a dry spell with four consecutive setbacks. With the recent slide the team has fallen under .500 on the season at 8-10 and are now three games back of Rochester for first place in the International League's North Division. Despite the team's recent struggles, IF Simon Pond continues to play solid ball. Over the last four games, he went 7-of-18 with four doubles and two RBI, raising his batting average to .333 on the season. C Guillermo Quiroz has made the most of his last eight at-bats, notching two home runs and three RBI. OF Alexis Rios, who leads the team in RBI (14) on the season, batted .353 with two RBI over his last four contests. RHP David Bush dropped to an even 2-2 following a 4-2 loss to Pawtucket on April 24th. In that contest, he went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, raising his ERA to 4.63 on the season.
NEW HAMPSHIRE FISHER CATS - The Fisher Cats were dropped in the first two games of their three game set with Erie this past weekend, with the final game of the series being postponed because of rain. The squad has lost three straight games overall and now stands 1 1/2 games back of Binghamton for first place in the Eastern League's Northern Division standings at 7-6. The Fisher Cats managed just four runs in their shortened two game series with Erie, while allowing 11. IF John-Ford Griffin had a rough series, going 0-for-7 with four strikeouts. He is now batting just .182 this season with 16 strikeouts in 33 plate appearances. IF Dominic Rich, who is batting a solid .340 this season, went 2-for-8 with a triple and a RBI in the two game set. RHP Jordan DeJong and LHP Derek Lee took the losses in the series. DeJong allowed two unearned runs in relief in the first game of the series, a 7-4 loss. As for Lee, he went five strong innings allowing two earned runs on five hits, but he received no run support in a 4-0 setback to Erie on April 24th.
DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS - After a fast start to the season, the Blue Jays have hit a bit of a bump in the road with two straight losses and six in their last seven games. The recent slump has dropped the squad into second place in the Florida State League's West Division at 10-8 overall. Over the last four games, IF Scott Dragicevich has stepped up his game, going 5-for-11 with two doubles and an RBI. However, the team's leading hitter (.339) on the season, IF Vito Chiaravalloti struggled a bit over the last four contests with a .250 batting average and no extra base hits. RHP Josh Banks was responsible for the team's only win in the past seven outings. He threw six scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over Clearwater on April 23rd, allowing just one hit while striking out five. He is now 2-0 with a miniscule 0.53 ERA on the season.
CHARLESTON ALLEY CATS - The Alley Cats have run off 10 straight wins in taking a 3 1/2 game lead for first place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division standings at 14-2. Over the last four contests, IF Ryan Roberts has torn the cover off the ball, batting .556 with two home runs and six RBI. He is now hitting .434 on the season with 38 total bases and 13 RBI. IF Eric Arnold has started to come alive, hitting .385 over his last four games, which has raised his season average to .256. RHP Joaquin Canizal continues to be dominant in middle relief, notching his team-leading third win of the season with two scoreless innings of work in the Alley Cats' 4-0 victory over Greensboro on April 23rd. A day earlier, RHP Shaun Marcum tossed a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts in 10-0 triumph over Greensboro. It was the league's first complete game this season, earning him Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of Friday April 16 through Thursday, April 22nd.
