Is Vlad looking kinda gimpy?

Postby sammyfan711 » Thu Apr 22, 2004 9:50 am

Scioscia had him at DH for a few games last week and I had the opportunity to see him on the late ESPN games; he seemed slow running the bases to me. When he first put him at DH I thought great - less of a chance to get hurt. But then his numbers tailed off and I thought of the Frank Thomas effect last year, when Frank hit like .50 points higher as a 1B than a DH and the talk around Chicago sports radio was to play him at first so he feels more involved in the game, somehow increasing his productivity. Anyone else think this could be affecting the lifelong National Leaguer?

After getting burned by him last year, and after never really hearing anything on his back when he did return, I passed on Vlad for Beltran this year!He looks like an old man running the bases this year and if you get 10 steals out of him you should consider yourself lucky.

My main concern is what I said before.Last year he had a bulging disc and then he rehabbed the injury, but you never did hear if this could be a long term thing or what? Many a great hitter have succumbed to the dreaded back injury! One of my all time favs DOn MAttingly was GOD for years and then his back problem zapped him and made him a shell of his former self.To risky for me when your drafting in the first round and a guy like Beltran is sitting there.

i agree i saw a game where he scored from first on a double to the OF, and when after he rounded third, he was chuggin..he looked like cecil fielder out there...ok well maybe that's an exagerration but you get the point- and i think beltran is far and away a better option

He had soreness in the knee if I recall, he's back in the OF now so I think knee wise he's fine.

Yes, Vlad has had a slight knee injury. I wouldn't be too concerned just yet.

Which knee is it? I ask only because if it's his right knee it could affect his hitting, just as Delgado's left knee has affected him in the past. Knee injuries suck and are chronic problems if not dealt with properly, especially for power hitters.
