If he DID need Tommy John surgery, he would have a torn ligament and would not be throwing at all, either off flat surfaces or mounds. I think the story is apocryphal.
Here's an interesting link re the TJ procedure though...

Man, when i read this article and saw John Smoltz's name at the top saying he'd be under going this surgery I wanted to cry. I was thinking that explains why Gorboski came in the other day to get the save. Then i saw the date at the top of the page and realized this was several years ago.
I just did a quick search to make sure I understood what I THOUGHT the TJ procedure was correctly and figured I'd toss it out there. W/ the elbow rumors floating around, I thought 'hmm, maybe they could TJ his elbow or somehing?'
Oh man! (Swiper the Fox) One if my 2 keepers Prior would be a huge loss for my team. The only thing that scares me is that they have continued to push back his return date over and over.....Could it be a sign? I find it hard to believe that with the limited work he got in the spring this is a new injury.
I live in Chicago near Wrigley Field. and just wanted to point out I haven't heard anything about a severe arm injury to Prior, not even the rumor of surgery. You'd think in Chicago we'd be all over any scrap of news on Prior. It's not in any major media outlet (Sun-Times or Tribune) and they're not talking about it on the sports radio I listen to.
As to the why the Cubs keep pushing back his return date: that's how it goes with injuries to achilles. No doctor can estimate when an injury to an achilles will heal.

I doubt theres any real truth to this. A lot of times theres certain information that you only hear on this board and nowhere else, most of the time this happens cause its BS, anyone remember the "Randy Johnson to Boston" thread?
Remember, this isn't news it's a rumor. A rumor attributed to our close friend, the "baseball executives." That's why it's not being reported by ESPN or anywhere else.
Bluto: Over? Did you say over? NOTHING is over until WE decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? HELL, NO!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
