Its the numbers of runs the pitcher gives up divided by the number of innings he pitches. For example if a pitcher goes 9 innings and gives up 1 run his ERA is 1.00

Earned runs given up, not Runs given up.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. -Crash Davis
Stewie : [watching a baseball game] Why does that man drop his club before he runs? I would bring it with me!

If you do not have a third of an inning pitched and give up a run your ERA is Infinite. What i don't understand is how yahoo average Infinite and the other ones to figuire out your ERA for the week.
Sean Tracey has my apologies, we all know Ozzie Guillen is an idiot. I'm rooting for you!

your ERA and WHIP are ratios of totals. so say your entire staff gave up 20 earned runs and pitched 60 innings your ERA would be 3. if a pitcher has an ERA or WHIP of INF, runs or hits count towards the total but of course that pitcher recorder no outs to bring the ERA down or WHIP down.

So, in H2H for example:
If an RP has a 11 era over 2 innings and a SP has a 11 era over 6 innings, which one would hurt you more?
What I can't figure out is whether a RP's era affects your team era as much as your SP's does.
Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

RP pitch less innings, so there earned runs are spread over a much lower margin of innings. Thats why if a RP gets shelled he kills you in ERA cuz its like 36.00.
