Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - The Houston Astros placed pitcher Andy Pettitte on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained left elbow. The move is retroactive to Wednesday, April 7.
The injury occurred while Pettitte was at-bat and checked a swing during his first start of the year on Tuesday against San Francisco.
An MRI exam was performed and it revealed inflammation in the left elbow with a strain in the flexor tendon.
The 31-year-old lefthander is 0-1 with a 10.13 earned run average in his one start for the Astros this season. He gave up six runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings during a 7-5 loss to the Giants.
After nine seasons with the New York Yankees, Pettitte was signed by Houston as a free agent on December 11, 2003.
The Astros recalled right-handed pitcher Brandon Backe from Triple-A New Orleans to fill the roster spot.
